Error codes

Range
error codes,
read properly.

A code narrows the search and is also the thing most often read wrong: the same characters mean different things on different brands, and a fair number of the codes people look up are not failures at all — they are modes the appliance was left in.

Three things before
you look it up.

A code is a lead, not a verdict. These decide whether the answer you find will be any use.

01

The code, character by character

Write down every letter and number in order, and note whether it blinks or beeps. Photograph it before anything else, since turning a knob or switching the breaker can wipe it.

02

The model number, all of it

It is usually on a label behind the storage drawer or around the oven door opening. One code can mean an igniter on one make and a door lock on another.

03

Any smell of gas or scorching?

Your answer decides whether you shut the range off and head outside right now, or book the next free slot.

What each kind
of code means.

Codes fall into a handful of families. The family says more about the likely repair than the characters do — and one of them is not a repair at all.

How to read a code

Mode, not a failure

51 codes

Something the range was told to do, or a state it chose on purpose — a control lock, a Sabbath setting, a demo mode that lights the display but never heats, a pan warning on an induction zone. Nothing has worn out, and no part is needed.

Burners and ignition

3 codes

A burner was asked to light and the range did not sense a flame, or the spark kept firing after the flame was there. Moisture or food in the igniter and a cap sitting out of place are ruled out before the spark module or a switch is replaced. A smell of gas outranks any code: leave the house and phone the gas utility from outside.

Surface elements and induction

38 codes

A radiant element, a coil or an induction zone did not heat the way the control expected, or ran hotter than it should. The pan, the switch behind the knob and the wiring to the element come first; on induction, the power board and the coil under the glass are checked next. A zone that will not switch off, or a crack in the glass, means the breaker goes off before anything else.

Oven heating

18 codes

The oven under the burners called for heat and the cavity did not warm the way the control planned. On an electric oven a bake or broil element that has burned open is the usual cause; on a gas oven the igniter and the valve it opens come first. The wiring and the relay are checked before the board takes the blame.

Temperature sensor

30 codes

The oven sensor sent a reading the control would not accept, or one that climbed well past the setting. A loose plug or a sensor that has drifted is ruled out before the control board, and a temperature that keeps rising means the range is switched off at the breaker first.

Controls and communication

70 codes

The display, the main board or the induction power board lost contact with one another, or one of them failed its own self-check. A power dip, a loose cable or moisture from a boil-over is ruled out before a board is replaced, and a range that keeps heating while this code shows is switched off at the breaker.

Questions about
the codes.

The code on my range is not listed here. What next?
It only means we have not documented it yet; a code is added when the maker's own material explains it. Write the characters down, note whether they blink, and enter them in the booking form so the technician can check them against your model.
Does a range code mean the same on every brand?
No. A code that names an oven sensor on one make can point to a door lock or a board on another, and some makers changed meanings from one generation to the next. Always read a code against the make and, where it counts, the exact model.
Can I clear a range code myself?
Turning the range off at its breaker for a few minutes sometimes clears one, and a code that never returns was often a brief power dip. A code that keeps coming back is reporting a real problem. If a burner, element or the oven stays on while a code shows, keep the breaker off and book instead of resetting.
The range shows a code but still cooks. Is anything broken?
Maybe not. Some codes people look up are settings or locks — a control lock, a Sabbath setting, a demo mode, a pan warning on an induction zone — that change how the range acts without a part failing. Each code page flags those and says how to turn them off.
