What the range diagnostic visit
involves.
A range diagnostic visit starts with the appliance doing the thing you called about. The technician lights or switches on each burner or zone, sets the oven to bake and to broil, and watches what happens rather than guessing from the symptom. A gas range is checked for how each flame lights and burns; an electric or induction range for which zones draw power and which stay cold. The oven is timed through preheat and its temperature compared with the setting. Only then are panels opened and parts measured, and the visit ends with a named cause, the work it needs and its price.

Diagnostic visit,
step by step.
Name the failed part, the work and the price, and say so plainly when the range is not worth repairing.
Watch the range misbehave: light each burner or start each zone, then run the oven through a bake and a broil.
Rule out the simple causes first, such as the gas shutoff, the breaker, a burner cap out of place, a control lock or a non-magnetic pan.
Open the panels that matter and measure the likely parts, from igniters and elements to sensors, switches and board outputs.
Check for gas at the fittings on a gas or dual-fuel range and for scorched wiring at the terminal block on an electric one.

The scale on this page shows where range jobs usually land, never what yours will cost. A burner that will not light can be a wet igniter, a cracked electrode or a failing spark module; an oven that stays cold can be an element, a weak gas igniter, a sensor or a relay. None of that can be told apart from a description. A number offered before the range has been run and measured is a guess, or it is padded to cover the worst case. Here, the price follows the diagnosis and comes before any part is changed, and the decision to go ahead stays with you.

The kitchen, the climate and the building all change how the range diagnostic visit goes. These notes are about that, metro by metro.
All service areasTampa BayFL · 31 areas
Most Tampa Bay kitchens cook on an electric range, so a diagnostic there begins with the 240-volt supply behind it, then tests each surface element and the oven below before a control board is blamed for what a storm surge may have done.
OrlandoFL · 30 areas
Orlando builder packages put the same freestanding range into house after house, so the technician records the model and build date, runs every burner or element and a bake cycle, and judges this range by what it does rather than by what the neighbors needed.
Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas
A Miami tower range is almost always electric, often a slide-in with a glass or induction top, so the diagnostic reads its stored error history and each zone's output from the front, within the hours the building sets for trades.
New York MetroNY · 75 areas
Most New York apartments still cook with gas, so a range diagnostic there usually opens with the burners: flame shape, igniter spark and the oven's lighting sequence, and any odor of gas ends the visit until the utility has checked the line.
HoustonTX · 36 areas
Houston homes split between gas and electric ranges, with dual-fuel models using both, so the diagnostic first confirms what feeds the burners and what heats the oven, then tests whichever side the complaint belongs to.
ChicagoIL · 50 areas
A Chicagoland range diagnostic often meets an older gas range in a two-flat or bungalow, where the technician checks the shutoff and connector behind it, lights every burner and times how long the oven igniter takes to open the valve.
Los AngelesCA · 95 areas
Los Angeles kitchens hold everything from mid-century gas ranges to 48-inch pro-style dual-fuel units, so the diagnostic starts by identifying the platform, since sealed and open burners come apart differently and their ovens use different controls.
San DiegoCA · 31 areas
Near the San Diego coast a diagnostic looks hard at the spark electrodes and wiring terminals under the range top, where damp salt air leaves corrosion, while inland homes more often need a plain check of burners, elements and the oven sensor.
San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas
Bay Area kitchens sit on both sides of the shift away from gas, with older houses keeping gas ranges and recent remodels choosing induction, so a diagnostic confirms which technology it is testing before any meter comes out.
