Viking ranges,
specifically.

Viking, made mostly in Greenwood, Mississippi, sells gas, dual-fuel, induction and electric ranges, with both open and sealed burners on its gas models. Its current range manuals troubleshoot by symptom rather than by code, so a visit usually starts from what the burners or the oven are doing.

The Viking lineup

What is particular
to Viking.

Viking's ranges run from the 3 Series and 5 Series to the 7 Series and the Tuscany line, and each has its own manual. Knob lighting, ignition and oven controls differ between series, so the model number on the serial plate comes first.

Open or sealed burners

Viking still builds open-burner ranges in the commercial style it began with, along with sealed-burner models whose one-piece porcelain top holds spills. The two are cleaned and serviced differently, so the model tells the technician which burner parts to bring.

SureSpark relights the flame

Viking's gas and dual-fuel ranges use SureSpark ignition with automatic reignition: if a flame goes out while gas is flowing, the igniter sparks until it relights. Viking's own list of reasons for sparking after the flame lights includes an ungrounded supply, reversed polarity and wet or dirty igniters.

Red knob rings mean an error

On 7 Series ranges the rings behind the knobs turn red and flash in a set pattern when the range has an error. Viking does not publish the flash patterns in the owner's manual, so the technician reads them.

Induction checks the pan

On Viking 5 Series induction ranges the pan indicator flashes and the element will not heat if the pan's material or size is unsuitable. Anything under about 2 inches across is ignored altogether.

Parts

Igniters, spark modules, burner heads and oven elements are ordered by model and series. Older Viking ranges may need parts ordered after the first visit.

Repair or replace

Viking ranges are heavy, largely mechanical appliances, and ignition, element and thermostat problems are routine repairs. Replacement is worth weighing when an older range has a failing oven and worn burners at the same time.

Questions about
Viking ranges.

Why does my Viking burner keep clicking after it lights?
Viking lists three reasons for igniters sparking after the flame is lit: the power supply is not grounded, its polarity is reversed, or the igniters are wet or dirty. Let wet burners dry first; if the clicking continues, book a visit, since the other two are wiring checks.
The knob rings on my Viking 7 Series range are flashing red. What does that mean?
Red backlighting with flashing rings is how the 7 Series signals an error code. Viking does not print what each pattern means in the owner's manual, so note which knob is flashing and book a visit.
Why won't my Viking induction range heat my pan?
If the pan is not magnetic or is the wrong size, the pan indicator flashes and the element stays off. Viking says pottery, glass, aluminum and copper pans do not work, and anything smaller than about 2 inches is not recognized.
How hot does a Viking range get during self-clean?
Viking says its ovens reach up to 750°F during self-clean, and the cycle usually lasts 3 to 3½ hours plus about 30 minutes to cool. A door that stays locked until the oven cools is part of that design.
