If you smell gas, get outside first; if not, cut the power

A cracked glass top is urgent in one sense: it must not be used at all. Do not switch on any zone, keep liquids off it, and cut the breaker if liquid got in or anything sparks. The glass is a replacement part ordered by model, so book once you have the model number.

What it
usually means.

The glass on a smooth-top or induction range is a ceramic glass made to handle heat, but not a hard knock, a sharp point dropped on it or an empty pan left on high. Once it cracks, spills and cleaning water can run down through the crack onto live elements, wiring and induction coils, and the glass itself can break further as it heats and cools. A crack is not cosmetic: it means the top cannot be used until the glass is replaced, and on many ranges the glass comes as one part with its frame and trim.

Answer these first

01

Where is the crack: across a cooking zone, at an edge or corner, or near the controls?

02

Did it follow a dropped pan, a heavy lid, or a pan that boiled dry?

03

Does anything light up, hum or smell when a zone is switched on?

04

Can liquid get into the crack from a spill or from wiping?

05

Is the range a radiant glass top or an induction model?

Check these
before you book.

Range glass top cracked: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Stop using the range top right away, including the zones away from the crack.

02

Switch off the range breaker if liquid has run into the crack or anything hums, sparks or smells.

03

Keep liquids off the glass: no wet cloth and no spray cleaner on or near the crack.

Also worth checking

  • Once the glass is cold, run a fingernail across the line; a crack catches, a surface mark does not.
  • Take a photo of the crack and of the model label when you book, since the glass is ordered by model.

5 things range glass top cracked turns out to be, from scratch or ring mistaken for a crack to pan boiling dry on high.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

Scratch or ring mistaken for a crack

Rings from a pan base, metal marks and fine scratches can look like lines but have no edge you can feel with a fingernail once the glass is cold. A cleaner made for glass tops removes many of them.

  2. 02 low

Melted sugar or plastic left to set

Syrup or a melted plastic utensil that cools on the glass can pull out a small pit or chip as it shrinks. A chip that has not become a crack may not need a new top, but it needs to be looked at.

  3. 03 low to moderate

Element damaged by liquid through the crack

Once a spill has run through a crack, the radiant element or induction coil under it can short or stop heating, so the part under the glass is checked along with the glass.

  4. 04 moderate to highest

Impact from a dropped pan or jar

A pot, a heavy lid or a jar slipping from a shelf above can crack the glass at the point of impact, often with a star of lines around it.

  5. 05 moderate to highest

    Pan boiling dry on high

An empty or dry pan on a high setting can overheat one spot of the glass until it cracks, sometimes with sugar or melted plastic fused to the surface.

Questions about
range glass top cracked.

Can I use the zones away from the crack until the repair?
No. The glass is one piece, and heat anywhere on it can spread the crack. A spill anywhere on the top can also reach live parts through it.
Is a small chip at the edge as serious as a crack?
A chip at the edge can grow once the glass heats and cools a few times. Have it looked at before you rely on the top; sometimes it can stay in service, sometimes it cannot.
Can the glass be fixed with a repair kit?
Not safely. Resin kits fill the surface of a chip but do not restore the strength of the glass, and they are not made for the heat under a pan. A cracked top is replaced.
Does a new glass top mean a new range?
Not usually. The glass top is sold as a part for most models, often together with its frame. Whether it is worth it depends on the age of the range and the part for your model, which we check before any work starts.
