New York Metro, NY
Range repair in New York Metro.
Gas has fed New York kitchens for generations, and most apartments still cook on a gas range, often a narrow one in a galley kitchen. Buildings set the hours for any work, a smell of gas brings in the utility and often the building, and the newest construction is going all-electric, carrying induction ranges into kitchens that never had them.

What New York Metro does
to a range.
New York City's Local Law 154 of 2021 bars new construction from burning high-emission fuels on site, and the Buildings Department notes that the rule reaches domestic cooking ranges as well as heating.
The all-electric requirement applied first to one- and two-family homes and other buildings under seven stories filed from January 1, 2024, and it reaches every occupancy, taller towers included, for filings from July 2, 2027.
Con Edison's main utility company provides electric, gas and steam service to more than 3 million customers across the city and Westchester County.
Only about 33 percent of the city's occupied homes are lived in by their owners, by the Census Bureau's 2020–2024 estimates.
The countiesTower living
Many towers vent the kitchen through a recirculating fan rather than a duct to the outside, so smoke from a spill on a glass top or from a self-clean cycle lingers and can set off alarms; a range that smokes on every preheat is worth a visit.
Small kitchens
When the range is the only way to cook in the home, one dead burner is an inconvenience but a dead oven or glass top stops dinner, so the visit aims to finish in one trip with the common parts on board.
Older housing stock
Older houses may feed a gas range through piping laid generations ago and a connector that has been reused across several ranges; an old uncoated brass connector is worth replacing whenever the range is pulled out.

Ten range repairs, cheapest first, each with what New York Metro changes about it.
What we doDiagnostic visit
Most New York apartments still cook with gas, so a range diagnostic there usually opens with the burners: flame shape, igniter spark and the oven's lighting sequence, and any odor of gas ends the visit until the utility has checked the line.
Burner and igniter repair
A New York apartment range has often cooked on gas for many years, and burner ports clogged by boil-overs or a spark switch stuck on after a spill are routine repairs, done with the gas closed at the shutoff behind the range.
Surface element and glass top repair
Electric ranges in New York are most common in newer or renovated buildings never piped for gas, and a glass-top element repair there is planned around building hours and the tight clearance on either side of the range.
Bake and broil elements
New York's electric ranges live mostly in newer or renovated buildings, and a bake element there is changed from inside the oven cavity, so the range can stay in the tight gap between cabinets.
Oven igniter and gas valve repair
Gas range ovens are everywhere in New York apartments, and a bake burner that will not light usually has a tired igniter; the repair tests it, the safety valve and the burner, and a smell of gas means stopping and calling the utility first.
Temperature sensor and thermostat repair
Older New York gas ranges may still regulate the oven with a mechanical thermostat and capillary bulb instead of an electronic sensor, and when that thermostat drifts, the repair recalibrates it or fits a matching replacement.
Door hinge, gasket and lock repair
In a narrow New York kitchen the range door swings into a tight aisle and takes knocks, so a sprung hinge or door glass loose in its frame is a common repair, finished without moving the range.
Convection fan repair
In a New York apartment where the range oven is the only oven, a noisy convection fan is worth fixing before it seizes, and its motor, blade and mounting are checked in one visit.
Induction board and coil repair
New York's newest all-electric buildings are bringing induction ranges into kitchens that once knew only gas, and a repair there traces an error through the coil, the power board and the cooling fan with the range still in its slot.
Knobs, switches and controls
New York gas ranges rely on the valve behind each knob and the spark switch on its stem, and a burner that keeps clicking after a pot boils over usually means moisture in that switch, which may dry out or may need replacing.
