What the range oven igniter and gas valve repair
involves.

Gas range oven igniter replacement is the answer to most gas range ovens that will not heat. The oven burner under the floor panel is lit by a hot surface igniter, a small element that glows orange before any gas flows. The igniter is wired in series with the oven safety valve, and the valve only opens once enough current passes through the igniter. As the igniter ages it still glows but draws less and less current, so the oven takes longer to light and eventually does not light at all, while the igniter keeps glowing and no gas comes. The safety valve, the broil burner igniter and the burner itself are tested in the same visit, and every gas fitting touched is checked for leaks before the technician leaves.

How the visit goes

Oven igniter and gas valve repair,
step by step.

Run a bake and a broil cycle, confirming the burner lights promptly, burns blue and cycles off at the set temperature.

01

Set a bake temperature and watch the igniter through the floor panel opening, timing how long it glows before the burner lights.

02

Close the gas shutoff and switch off power, then remove the floor panel and the burner shield.

03

Measure the igniter's current draw and resistance, and test the safety valve's coil and the wiring between them.

04

Replace the igniter, the valve or the burner as needed, and leak-test every joint that was opened.

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether the igniter glows but the oven does not light
  2. Whether the oven lights after a long delay
  3. Whether the broiler has its own burner at the top of the oven or in a drawer below
  4. Whether you have smelled gas around the range

A weak igniter is the usual answer and sits at the low end. A safety valve or a broil burner costs more, and every opened gas joint is leak-tested before the job is closed.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Gas range ovens are uncommon around Tampa Bay, but where one runs on utility gas or propane, a bake burner that takes minutes to light points to a glow-bar igniter too weak to draw the current that opens the safety valve.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

In the Orlando subdivisions piped for gas, a range oven that glows without lighting is a frequent call, and the igniter's current draw is measured first, because the gas valve behind it is replaced far less often.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

South Florida gas ranges are mostly in houses rather than towers, and on a propane supply the oven's valve and burner orifice must be set up for that gas, which the repair confirms along with the igniter.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Gas range ovens are everywhere in New York apartments, and a bake burner that will not light usually has a tired igniter; the repair tests it, the safety valve and the burner, and a smell of gas means stopping and calling the utility first.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

In Houston a range oven that lights slowly or goes out mid-bake typically has an igniter losing strength, and after a storm outage some owners learn that a glow-bar oven cannot light at all without electricity, which is how it is designed.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Chicagoland's gas ranges bake through long winters, and an oven that lights only some of the time is the classic sign of an aging igniter, which is replaced and then timed through several ignitions before the visit ends.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Los Angeles gas ranges run from mid-century models to pro-style ones with separate bake and broil burners, and the repair tests each burner's igniter and the valve that feeds it, treating any gas odor as a call to the utility first.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Coastal San Diego ranges on gas can show corrosion on the oven igniter's wire connector sooner than inland ones, so a repair there checks that splice and the valve terminals as well as the igniter's current draw.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area gas ranges are mostly in established houses, and when one's oven stops lighting, the repair covers the igniter and safety valve, which gives an owner weighing a later switch to induction a clear picture of the range's condition.

Questions about
the range oven igniter and gas valve repair.

The igniter glows, but my gas range oven never lights. Is the valve bad?
Usually the igniter is the part to blame, even though it glows. A weak igniter does not pass enough current to open the valve. Measuring its current settles it; the valve is replaced only when the igniter tests good and the valve still stays shut.
My oven smells of gas for a moment when it lights. Is that normal?
A faint whiff in the first second or two, while the burner lights, can be normal. A smell that lingers, grows stronger, or appears when the oven is off is not. In that case turn the oven off, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.
The oven heats, but the broiler will not light. Is that the same repair?
On ranges with a broil burner at the top, the broiler has its own igniter and sometimes its own valve port, so it can fail while the bake burner works. On older ranges with a broiler drawer below, the bake burner also does the broiling, and a problem there usually affects both.
Can I replace an oven igniter myself?
The part is simple, but it sits next to the gas supply and must be wired correctly for the valve to open. The safer path is to have the gas and the leak test handled by a technician.
