What the range burner and igniter repair
involves.

Gas range burner repair covers everything between the knob and the flame. Turning a knob opens a valve and closes a small switch that tells the spark module to fire; the module sends a pulse to a ceramic igniter beside the burner head, and the spark lights the gas as it comes out of the ports under the cap. A spill can soak the igniter or short a spark switch, a cracked ceramic lets the spark jump to the wrong place, and food or cleaner can block the ports so the flame is ragged or lifts off the burner. The repair starts with the cheapest explanation, a cap out of place or a wet igniter, and moves to the switch, the module or the burner head only when the simple answers are ruled out.

How the visit goes

Burner and igniter repair,
step by step.

Light every burner from high to low, confirming a clean blue flame that stays lit and ticking that stops once it catches.

01

Light each burner in turn and watch where the spark goes, how soon the gas lights and what the flame looks like.

02

Remove the grates, caps and heads, clean the ports and dry the igniter and its wire.

03

Inspect the igniters for cracks and test the spark switches behind the knobs and the module that feeds them.

04

Replace the failed igniter, switch, module or burner head, and check the burner is seated on its valve with no gas escaping.

05

Light every burner from high to low, confirming a clean blue flame that stays lit and ticking that stops once it catches.

Range Burner Won't Light

6 causes, cheapest first

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether the burner ticks without lighting, lights slowly or keeps ticking once lit
  2. Whether one burner or all of them are affected
  3. Whether something boiled over or the range top was recently cleaned
  4. What color and shape the flame is

It also answers

Low,
on the site's scale.

Cleaning ports and reseating a cap costs almost nothing in parts. A new igniter, spark switch or burner head is a small part, and the spark module that feeds them all sits a little higher.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Gas ranges are the minority around Tampa Bay, fed by a utility main in some neighborhoods and by propane in others, and a burner that clicks without catching there often has damp or dirty spark electrodes after a humid stretch.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Where Orlando subdivisions were piped for natural gas, range burners see heavy family use, and a cracked igniter porcelain or a burner cap sitting slightly off its base is the usual reason one burner refuses to light.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

South Florida gas ranges are mostly in houses with a utility line or a propane tank rather than in towers, and on the coast the burner repair includes clearing salt deposits from the igniter tips and checking the spark module's connections.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

A New York apartment range has often cooked on gas for many years, and burner ports clogged by boil-overs or a spark switch stuck on after a spill are routine repairs, done with the gas closed at the shutoff behind the range.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston households that cook on gas lean on their burners hard, and a flame that lifts, burns yellow or goes out usually traces to a misaligned cap, a clogged port or the air mix, all corrected at the range top.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Some older Chicagoland gas ranges still light their burners from a standing pilot rather than an electric spark, so a repair there keeps that pilot clean and adjusted, or tests the spark system on newer models, before any part is ordered.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Pro-style ranges in Los Angeles remodels run high-output burners and sometimes automatic reignition, and when a burner keeps clicking after it lights, the reignition sensing and the spark module are tested along with the electrode.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Salt air near the San Diego shore can corrode the thin lead that runs from the spark module to each electrode, so a burner that sparks weakly on the coast often needs that lead replaced along with the igniter.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

The Bay Area's remaining gas ranges are largely in established houses, and a burner repair there covers the igniters and burner heads plus a look at the connector behind the range, since an older one may be worth replacing while the range is out.

Questions about
the range burner and igniter repair.

All my burners keep clicking even when they are off. What happened?
One of the spark switches behind the knobs is closed when it should not be, usually because water or a cleaner ran down the valve stem. Turn the range off at the plug or the breaker and let it dry out for a day. If the ticking returns once power is back, the switch is replaced.
Can I light a burner with a match when the igniter fails?
On most gas range tops you can, holding a long match or lighter at the burner ports and then turning the knob. Do not leave the gas on while you look for a match. It is a stopgap only; a burner that will not spark still needs its igniter or switch fixed.
The flame lifts off the burner or goes out on low. Why?
Partly blocked ports, a cap that is not sitting flat, a draft from a window or fan, or a low-flame setting that was never adjusted for your gas can all cause it. Cleaning and reseating come first, then the valve's low setting is adjusted if the flame still will not hold.
Is a burner that will not shut off an emergency?
Yes. If turning the knob to off does not put out the flame, close the gas shutoff behind the range if you can reach it safely. If you cannot, or if you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.
