What it
usually means.

When you turn a gas burner knob to light, a switch behind that knob tells the spark module to fire, and on most ranges every igniter clicks together. Once the knob moves past the light position the clicking should stop. Continuous clicking means the module is still getting that signal: a switch is stuck, moisture is bridging switch contacts, or the module itself is failing. Some ranges relight a flame on their own and keep sparking until they sense it lit, so on those a burner whose flame sits away from its igniter also clicks on and on.

Answer these first

01

Does the clicking continue with every knob turned off?

02

Does it stop when you wiggle or turn one particular knob?

03

Did it start after a boil-over or a cleaning of the range top?

04

Does the burner light and keep clicking, or click without ever lighting?

05

Does the manual say your range relights burners automatically?

Range burner keeps clicking: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Turn every knob firmly to off and listen for whether the clicking stops.

02

After a spill, switch off power to the range at the breaker and give it time to dry completely before trying again.

03

If you smell gas at any point while it clicks, leave the home and call the gas utility from outside.

Also worth checking

  • Once cool, check that every cap sits flat and centered on its burner.
  • When you book, say whether it clicks with all knobs off or only while a burner is lit.

How soon does it need a visit?

Constant clicking is annoying rather than dangerous as long as no gas smell comes with it. Cut power to the range if it will not stop, and give a wet range time to dry. If gas flows while a burner fails to light, or you smell gas, leave and call the gas utility from outside.

5 things range burner keeps clicking turns out to be, from moisture in a spark switch to igniter wire leaking its spark to the frame.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

    Moisture in a spark switch

Water or cleaner that ran down past a knob can bridge the switch behind it. The clicking often stops by itself once the range has dried out.

  2. 02 no repair

    Flame not reaching the igniter

On a range that relights automatically, a crooked cap or blocked ports keep the flame away from the igniter, so the range believes the burner is out and keeps sparking.

  3. 03 low

    Stuck or worn spark switch

The switches behind the knobs wear from turning and from grease working in. One that stays closed keeps the whole system clicking.

  4. 04 low to moderate

    Failing spark module

A module that has started to break down can fire nonstop or in irregular bursts, even with every knob off.

  5. 05 low

Igniter wire leaking its spark to the frame

A cracked igniter or a chafed wire under the range top can send the spark into bare metal, so the module keeps on trying.

Questions about
range burner keeps clicking.

Can I switch off the power to stop the clicking?
Yes. Switching off the breaker or unplugging the range stops the spark without touching the gas. The spark, the oven and the clock are all out of use while it is off.
The clicking started after I cleaned the range top. Will it stop?
Often it does once the switches dry. Leave the power off overnight and try again; if it still clicks, a switch has probably been damaged.
Why do all the burners click when I light only one?
Most ranges share one spark module among all the igniters, so every one of them clicks whenever any knob is in the light position. That part is normal.
Does a clicking burner waste gas?
The clicking itself uses only electricity. The concern is a burner that clicks without lighting while its knob is on, because gas is then flowing unlit. Turn it off if it has not lit within a few seconds.
