What it
usually means.
Newer ranges run the oven, and often the range top as well, from an electronic control with a touch panel on the backguard or along the front edge. Older ones use knobs wired to switches, with a clock and timer beside them. A panel that stops responding can be locked on purpose, frozen after a power disturbance, let down by a worn or wet touch membrane, or dead because its board or power supply has failed. Heat, grease and steam rising from the burners are the everyday enemies of a panel mounted just above them.
The 5 causes, cheapest first
Answer these first
Is the display lit, blank, or frozen on one screen?
Do some keys work and others not?
Does the display show a padlock or a lock light?
Did it start after a spill, a lot of steam, or a storm?
On a knob range, is only the clock and timer dead, or the oven too?

Range control panel not responding: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.
Look for a lock symbol and press and hold the lock key the way the manual shows.
Cut power to the range at the breaker, wait a few minutes, and restore it to restart the control.
Keep spray cleaner off the panel; spray a cloth instead, and let a wet panel dry completely.
Also worth checking
- On a gas range, if you smell gas while the controls act strangely, leave and call the gas utility from outside.
- Note what the display shows and which keys still work when you book.
How soon does it need a visit?
A dead or frozen panel is not usually urgent. It becomes urgent if the oven or a zone heats while the panel ignores you: switch off the breaker at once. A gas smell at any time means leaving and calling the gas utility from outside.

5 things range control panel not responding turns out to be, from control lock switched on to failed control board.
The cost guide-
01 no repair
Control lock switched on
Most touch ranges have a lock that ignores every key except the one that releases it. It is easy to set by leaning on the panel while wiping it.
-
02 low
Control hung up after an outage or surge
An outage or a surge can leave the control stuck in a half-started state. Cutting the breaker for a few minutes often restarts it cleanly.
-
03 low to moderate
Worn or wet touch membrane
The touch pad is a layered membrane that wears where it is pressed most and can take in moisture from steam or cleaning spray. Dead keys, or keys that press themselves, are the signs.
-
04 low
Loose ribbon cable behind the panel
The flat cable from the touch pad to the board can loosen with heat and vibration, so whole rows of keys stop answering.
-
05 moderate to highest
Failed control board
Heat from the burners and the oven vent ages the parts on the board. A board that has failed may show nothing, broken segments, or random beeps.
