AGA ranges,
specifically.

AGA sells two unlike kinds of range in the US: cast-iron models such as the eR7, R7 and ERA, where every oven and hotplate is a heat zone of its own, and the Elise and Mercury, which set gas burners or an induction top over conventional ovens. Which family you own decides whether a visit begins from a handset code, a thermostat or a burner.

The AGA lineup

What is particular
to AGA.

The current US lineup covers the electric eR7 and R7 cast-iron ranges (with hotcupboard, induction or dual-fuel module versions), the all-electric ERA with a four-zone induction hob and a cast-iron hotplate, and the Elise and Mercury in dual-fuel and induction form. The eR7 reports numbered codes, the R7 works from thermostats, and the Elise and Mercury induction tops show letters of their own.

Five zones share one supply

An eR7 has a boiling plate, a simmer plate and three ovens, but its board lets only three elements draw power at once. The hotplates take full power first, so ovens that climb slowly while both plates are on can be normal behavior rather than a failed element.

A locked zone waits for a technician

When the same blocking error shows up four times inside 24 hours, the eR7 shuts that zone down for good. Switching the range off at the breaker does not bring it back; the reset sits on the main board and AGA keeps it for service visits.

R7 hotplates run on thermostats

The R7 controls its boiling and simmer plates with liquid-filled mechanical thermostats, each backed by an overheat thermostat that has to be reset by hand. A cold plate on an R7 is traced through those parts, since there is no code to read.

Elise and Mercury burners must hold

Every gas burner on the Elise and Mercury dual-fuel ranges has a flame supervision device that stops gas if the flame goes out. A burner that dies the moment you let go of the knob usually means that device never warmed enough to stay open.

Parts

Cast-iron models use AGA-specific parts such as the eR7's duplex thermocouples and its 2.5 kW hotplate and oven elements, so the serial number is read before anything is ordered. Lead times for AGA parts could not be confirmed on an AGA source.

Repair or replace

A cast-iron AGA is built from parts that can be changed one at a time: an element, a thermocouple, a relay board. Repair is the normal answer for those ranges, and an induction code or a burner that will not stay lit on an Elise or Mercury is likewise a single-part job rather than a reason to replace the range.

Questions about
AGA ranges.

Why does my AGA eR7 keep its code after I turn the power off and on?
AGA's field manual explains that a locked zone ignores a power cycle and stays disabled until the reset on the main board is used. That reset is a service step, so note the code and book a visit.
Why do the ovens on my AGA eR7 warm up slowly when the hotplates are on?
The eR7 shares power among its zones and gives the two hotplates full power first. AGA's user guide says a range started with every zone on needs roughly an hour to reach working heat.
What does E2 mean on an AGA Elise or Mercury induction range?
It means the induction electronics have become too hot, most often because the range is short of ventilation or a pan boiled dry. Let the top cool, and book a visit if E2 returns with normal cooking.
The burner on my AGA Elise goes out as soon as I let go of the knob. What should I do?
Turn the knob to off and wait a full minute, then light it again and hold the knob in a little longer, as the owner's guide describes. If the flame still will not stay, the flame supervision device needs checking, so book a visit.
