A freestanding electric coil range in a US home kitchen with three coils glowing orange and the fourth dark and cold under a pot of water, every knob turned on.

Range

What it
usually means.

An electric range top heats with coil elements or with radiant elements under the glass, each fed through its own switch or through a relay on a control board. When one zone stops heating while the others work, the problem is almost always in that zone's own path: the element, its socket or wiring, or its switch. When several zones quit together, or the oven stops at the same time, look further back at the power reaching the range, a fuse inside some models, or the control board.

A technician kneels at an open freestanding range in a US home kitchen, holding a multimeter probe against the terminals of the bake element inside the oven. The 6 causes, cheapest first

Answer these first

01

Is it one element, several, or the whole range top?

02

Does the element glow red at all, or stay completely cold?

03

Does it switch on and off far more often than it used to?

04

On a coil range, does the element wobble or sit loosely in its socket?

05

Is the oven still heating normally?

Range surface element not heating: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

If several zones and the oven stopped at once, switch the range breaker fully off and back on.

02

On a coil range, with the range off and cold, push each coil firmly into its socket.

03

Swap the cold coil with a working one of the same size and see whether the problem moves with the coil.

Also worth checking

  • On a glass top, note whether the zone glows faintly or stays dark, and whether the display shows it as on.
  • Tell us the kind of top and which zone it is when you book.

How soon does it need a visit?

A cold element is rarely urgent, and the rest of the range usually keeps working. Stop using an element that sparks, smells of burning or sits loose in its socket, and switch off the breaker if you see scorching. Never use a glass top that is cracked.

The causes,

6 things range surface element not heating turns out to be, from half of the double breaker off to relay or board not switching the zone.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

Half of the double breaker off

If several zones and the oven fail together, one side of the double breaker may have tripped. Switching it fully off and back on restores it; if the supply itself is missing, that is an electrician's call.

  2. 02 low

    Burned-out coil or radiant element

An element can open inside with no visible sign, or show a bubble or split along a coil. It is confirmed with a meter and replaced.

  3. 03 low

Burned socket on a coil range

The socket a coil plugs into can char, especially where a loose coil sparked. A burned socket ruins a new coil as well, so the two are replaced together.

  4. 04 low

    Failed infinite switch

The switch behind the knob cycles power to hold a setting. When it fails, the element stays cold or behaves as if every setting were high.

  5. 05 low

    Glass-top limiter cutting out early

Radiant elements carry a limiter that switches them off when the glass gets too hot. A worn limiter cuts out far too soon, so the zone never gets properly hot.

  6. 06 moderate

Relay or board not switching the zone

On touch-control glass tops each zone is switched by a relay on a board. The display shows the setting while the relay never closes.

Questions about
range surface element not heating.

Can I replace a coil element myself?
On many coil ranges the coils plug in, and the manual shows how to lift one out with the range off and cold. If the socket is black or burned, a new coil will not solve it; the socket needs replacing too.
My glass-top zone glows but the pan barely heats. Why?
The element may be partly failed, the limiter may be cutting it out early, or the pan may not sit flat on the glass. Try a flat, heavy pan first; if it still struggles, it needs testing.
The whole range top is dead but the oven works. What does that tell me?
Power is clearly reaching the range, so the suspects move inside it: a board or an internal fuse that feeds the top on some models, or a wiring connection between them.
Is one dead element worth fixing on an older range?
Usually yes. A single element, socket or switch is among the simpler range repairs, and nothing else on the range is affected by it.
