What the range bake and broil element repair
involves.

Range bake element replacement is the most common repair on the oven of an electric, dual-fuel or induction range. The bake element lies on the oven floor or under a smooth floor panel, the broil element hangs from the ceiling, and each is a sheathed resistance wire that glows when current flows through it. After enough heating cycles the wire thins and breaks, often with a flash and a blister on the sheath, and from then on that element does nothing. A range whose oven browns only the tops of dishes has usually lost its bake element; one that bakes but will not broil has lost the element above. Before the new part goes in, the wires and terminals behind the rear wall and the relay or thermostat that switches the element are checked, since a burned connection or a stuck relay will ruin the replacement.

How the visit goes

Bake and broil elements,
step by step.

Fit the new element, restore power and run a bake and a broil, watching the element heat and the control switch it off at the set temperature.

01

Switch off the range at the breaker, take out the racks and, on a hidden-element oven, lift the floor panel.

02

Measure each element across its terminals and from terminal to sheath, and look for blisters or breaks.

03

Check the wires and connectors behind the rear wall for scorching and replace any that are burned.

04

Fit the new element, restore power and run a bake and a broil, watching the element heat and the control switch it off at the set temperature.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

In a Tampa Bay electric range, a bake element that blistered or split is a common find, and the new one goes in with tight, clean terminals, since a loose connection behind the oven's back wall burns through again.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando family houses bake in the range oven nearly every night, so a hidden bake element under the oven floor or a broil element gone dark is a regular repair, and because builder models repeat, the right part is often already known.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

A South Florida tower range bakes with electric elements, and a broil element that stopped glowing after a storm outage is tested along with the relay that powers it on the control board before either one is replaced.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

New York's electric ranges live mostly in newer or renovated buildings, and a bake element there is changed from inside the oven cavity, so the range can stay in the tight gap between cabinets.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Dual-fuel ranges are common in larger Houston kitchens, and their electric ovens carry bake, broil and often a convection element, so the repair confirms which element has failed before a part is matched to the model.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

In Chicagoland kitchens where the range oven carries the winter baking, a bake element that heats slowly may be getting low voltage from aging wiring, so the supply is measured under load before the element is condemned.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

The electric ovens in Los Angeles dual-fuel ranges often split baking between a hidden lower element and a rear ring, and the repair follows that maker's layout, matching each element to the exact model.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Near the San Diego shore, salt air reaches the terminals where the bake and broil elements pass through the oven wall, so a repair there cleans or replaces those connections along with the element that failed.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area electric and induction ranges bake with elements in the oven below, and a European range there may arrange them differently from an American one, so the repair is planned from the model number before the visit.

Questions about
the range bake and broil element repair.

My range oven element flashed and went dark. Can I still use the range top?
Leave the oven off; the broken element can arc again. The burners or zones on top are on separate circuits inside the range and can usually still be used, unless the breaker keeps tripping, in which case leave the whole range off until it is repaired.
How do I know which element has failed?
Set the oven to bake and look after a few minutes. On many ranges both elements take part in preheat, so the one that stays dark is the suspect. On a model with a hidden bake element the oven floor stays cool when that element has failed.
Can a failed element make the oven run too hot?
Rarely on its own. An oven that overshoots its setting usually has a relay stuck closed or a sensor reading low, and that is tested alongside the element.
Is the broil element the same as the one in the drawer below?
No. On ranges with a warming drawer, the drawer has its own small element and control, and a failure there does not affect the oven above. On older gas ranges the drawer may be a broiler with a flame, which is a different repair.
