Smeg ranges,
specifically.

Smeg sells gas, dual-fuel and induction ranges in the US, from the colorful 30- and 36-inch Portofino models to the Professional line in 24- to 48-inch widths. Most of its range manuals describe burners, knobs and lights rather than codes, so a visit begins from the model on the rating label and what the burners or oven are doing.

The Smeg lineup

What is particular
to Smeg.

The Portofino comes in 30 and 36 inches as full-gas and dual-fuel ranges; the Professional line adds full-gas and dual-fuel models from 24 to 48 inches and induction ranges from 24 to 36 inches. Each model has its own user manual code, which is how the right guide and parts are matched.

Fifteen seconds, then five minutes

Smeg's ignition rule is strict: if a burner has not lit within the first 15 seconds, the knob goes back to off and you wait five minutes before trying again. The same five-minute wait applies after a flame goes out on its own.

Crowns line up with the sensor

Each flame-spreader crown has to sit with its holes lined up on the thermocouple and igniter. A crown seated out of line after cleaning is a common reason a Smeg burner sparks but will not catch, and it is the first thing a technician looks at.

ERR messages on the Portofino

The Portofino dual-fuel range with the touch display can show ERR followed by a number. Smeg does not explain the numbers; it asks owners to note the message, the cooking function and the set temperature before service.

A lock message on the induction knobs

On the Professional induction ranges, holding the knobs for more than 30 seconds while Control lock is on brings up an error message. Letting go of the knobs clears it; it is not a sign of a failed board.

Parts

Smeg lists a separate user manual and installation manual for each range model, and parts are matched by the model and serial label. Parts lead times could not be confirmed on a Smeg source.

Repair or replace

A Smeg range with a burner that will not light or an oven that runs hot usually needs one part, such as an igniter, a thermocouple or a thermostat. Repair is the normal choice while the cavity, glass and frame are sound.

Questions about
Smeg ranges.

Why does my Smeg burner go out as soon as I let go of the knob?
The thermocouple has not warmed up enough to keep the gas open. Keep the knob pressed a few seconds longer after the flame appears; if it still goes out, wait five minutes, try once more and book a visit if nothing changes.
What should I do about an ERR message on my Smeg Portofino range?
Write down the full message, the cooking function in use and the temperature that was set, since Smeg asks for exactly those details. Then book a visit so the control can be checked.
My Smeg induction range shows a message when I hold the knobs. Is something wrong?
If Control lock is on and the knobs are held for more than 30 seconds, the range shows an error message by design. Release the knobs and it clears; switch the lock off the same way it was set before cooking.
Food burns quickly in my Smeg oven. What does Smeg point to?
Smeg's troubleshooting table names a defective thermostat when everything in the oven burns within a short time. That is a service repair, so book a visit rather than lowering the setting to compensate.
