What Manhattan does
to a range.
Where ranges sit in Manhattan: tower living, older housing stock, small kitchens.
All of New York MetroTower living
Most tower apartments are wired rather than piped for gas, so the range is electric, usually a slide-in with a glass or induction top on its own 240-volt circuit. When the zones and the oven go dead together, the unit's breaker panel is the first stop.
Older housing stock
Older houses may feed a gas range through piping laid generations ago and a connector that has been reused across several ranges; an old uncoated brass connector is worth replacing whenever the range is pulled out.
Small kitchens
When the range is the only way to cook in the home, one dead burner is an inconvenience but a dead oven or glass top stops dinner, so the visit aims to finish in one trip with the common parts on board.

Battery Park City
Only about 11 percent of the occupied homes in 10282, one of Battery Park City's ZIP codes, are lived in by their owners, by the Census Bureau's 2020–2024 estimates.
Greenwich Village
If a building's gas meter was pulled for non-use or construction, the city's Local Law 154 guidance lets the owner re-establish a gas account, as long as the work does not change the certificate of occupancy.
SoHo
The city's guidance on Local Law 154 says that when an existing building is divided into new residential units, the new units may still request their own gas accounts and meters, because the all-electric rule does not apply to that change.
Tribeca
Converted lofts whose open kitchens show off a pro-style range, with induction chosen in some of the newer conversions, and a freight elevator booking decides the day a technician can come.
Upper East Side
Pre-war apartments with kitchens rebuilt under co-op alteration rules, where the range stays on the building's gas line and a narrow model often fits the space.
Upper West Side
On July 13, 2019, a Con Edison cable failure left about 73,000 customers on Manhattan's West Side without power for roughly three hours, across much of the area from the 40s up to 72nd Street.
