The control panel along the back of a slide-in range seen close, its display lit with a small padlock symbol and every burner below it dark.

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from AGA's own guidance for L on its ranges. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

With all zones off, turn the two left-hand knobs counterclockwise together and hold until L disappears.

Cleared?

The range was set right without a new part. If the same message comes back while a burner or the oven is in use, or the range cuts out again, treat it as a new problem and book it.

What not to do

L is not a failure of the controls. The zones are refusing to start because they were locked on purpose.

What you may
notice with it.

The range problems L tends to arrive with. Answer these at the range before anyone is booked.

All problems

No repair indicated

Nothing to repair.

Something the range was told to do, or a state it chose on purpose — a control lock, a Sabbath setting, a demo mode that lights the display but never heats, a pan warning on an induction zone. Nothing has worn out, and no part is needed.

In AGA's own words

To lock the cooktop, simultaneously turn the two left-hand cooktop controls counter-clockwise (Fig. 2.7) and hold until the L symbol appears

Questions
about L.

Can I clear L myself?
With all zones off, turn the two left-hand knobs counterclockwise together and hold until L disappears.
Why won't the zones on my AGA Elise switch on while the oven works?
An L in the display means the top is locked. Unlock it with the two left-hand knobs and the zones respond again.
Can the lock on my AGA Mercury be set while cooking?
No. The guide says it can only be set when every zone is switched off.

Still showing L?

Book with the code exactly as it appears, the full model number, and whether you notice any smell of gas or scorching — with a code, that is where the diagnosis begins.
