On the all-electric Château ranges, U in a zone's display means the plate cannot find a pan it can heat. Power cannot be raised while U shows; the symbol goes away once a suitable pan is set on the zone, and cooking resumes at the earlier level if a pan was lifted and put back.

What to do when U shows on the rangeKind of codeSurface elements and induction
A radiant element, a coil or an induction zone did not heat the way the control expected, or ran hotter than it should. The pan, the switch behind the knob and the wiring to the element come first; on induction, the power board and the coil under the glass are checked next. A zone that will not switch off, or a crack in the glass, means the breaker goes off before anything else.
