What C81
actually means.
These three codes share one meaning on Whirlpool's help site: a cooking area on the range top got too hot and the automatic shutoff stepped in. The protection did its job; the question is why the area overheated.

What to do when C81 shows on the rangeKind of codeSurface elements and induction
A radiant element, a coil or an induction zone did not heat the way the control expected, or ran hotter than it should. The pan, the switch behind the knob and the wiring to the element come first; on induction, the power board and the coil under the glass are checked next. A zone that will not switch off, or a crack in the glass, means the breaker goes off before anything else.
Usually leads toSurface element and glass top repair
Electric zones that stay cold, run too hot or will not switch off, and cracked or damaged glass on radiant and induction models.
Shows up asRange Surface Element Not Heating
One coil or glass-top zone on an electric range stays cold, heats only weakly, or will not respond while the others work.

Before you book,
in this order.
Each step comes from Whirlpool's own guidance for C81 on its ranges. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.
Switch the oven off if it is running and give the top five minutes to cool.
Turn the cooking area back on and see whether it heats normally.
If a C8 code keeps returning, reset the breaker for a minute, then book a visit if it still shows.

It usually turns into surface element and glass top repair. Book with the code and the model number.
What not to do
C81 to C83 are not the H reminder that a surface is hot; H is normal after cooking and clears on its own.

Induction range
A glass top that heats the pan itself through copper coils and power boards, over an electric oven, with electronics doing almost all the work.
