Maintenance and prevention,
guide by guide.

This section covers the routine jobs that keep a range cooking reliably: looking after a smooth glass top, washing burner caps, heads and grates so every burner lights on the first spark, and running the oven's cleaning cycle without harming the range above or below it.

Glass top range care: pans, sugary spills and the razor scraper

Questions about
maintenance and prevention.

Can regular cleaning really prevent range repairs?
It prevents a fair share of them. Burners cleared of spills light properly, glass tops that never meet a dragged pan or a hardened sugar spill stay intact, and an oven cleaned a few times a year instead of every few weeks puts less strain on its lock and controls.
Which cleaning products are safe on a range?
Hot soapy water and a plastic pad for burner parts and grates, a ceramic cleaning cream and a razor scraper for glass, and nothing at all inside a self-cleaning oven before its cycle. Your owner's manual lists anything else the maker allows.
Is it safe to do this care myself?
Yes, for everything these guides describe, with the knobs off and the range cool. Removing panels, touching the gas connection or working on wiring is for a technician, and any smell of gas means leaving the house and calling the gas utility from outside.
