Get out, keep away from anything that can spark, and call the gas utility or 911 once you are outside. Never hunt for the leak, turn valves or relight a burner yourself. Work on the range begins only after the utility has made the home safe. ## What it usually means. Utilities add a sharp sulfur odorant to natural gas and propane so that people notice a leak long before it becomes dangerous. A gas range can release a trace of that odor for a moment when a burner is turned on and the spark has not caught yet, and it clears as soon as the flame is steady. An odor that stays, grows, or greets you in a kitchen where nothing is lit is a different matter: a knob valve that does not seat, a loose joint on the manifold or on the supply connector behind the range, or a burner that lost its flame while gas kept coming. Finding and stopping a leak is work for the gas utility, not for the household, and the range is repaired only after they have made the home safe. The 6 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 Does the odor vanish within seconds of a burner lighting, or does it linger in the room? 02 Is it strongest near the burners on top, low near the oven and drawer, or behind the range? 03 Are all the knobs fully in the off position, including one that may have been bumped by a hip or a pan handle? 04 Did the smell appear after the range was pulled out for cleaning, moved or newly hooked up? 05 Is the range fed by natural gas from the street or by propane from a tank? ## Check these before you book. Range gas smell: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 If the odor is strong or keeps coming back, get everyone and every pet out of the home now, without stopping to air the kitchen. 02 On the way out, do not flip light switches, press the range igniters or make a call until you are outside, since any of them can make a spark. 03 Once you are well clear of the house, call the gas utility's emergency number or 911. ### Also worth checking - Wait outside until the utility tells you the home is safe; shutting off and testing the gas is their job. - When you book, pass on what the utility found and whether they tagged the range out of service. ## The causes, cheapest first. 6 things range gas smell turns out to be, from spill or cleaner burning away to leak at the flexible connector or shutoff behind the range. That smell is not sulfur, and it fades as the residue burns off. If you cannot tell which smell it is, treat it as gas. No repair: check it yourself 2. 02 low ### Top burner blown out while the knob stayed on A boil-over, a draft from an open window or a misplaced burner cap can put out a low flame. Unless the range relights it automatically, gas keeps flowing unlit until someone turns the knob. As the igniter ages it lights later, and the gas that pooled in the meantime catches with a thump and leaves an odor in the kitchen. A worn valve, or a knob sitting a little short of its off stop, can pass a thin stream of gas that never lights. One that seeps lets a little gas reach the oven burner area even when the range is idle. The utility locates and isolates the leak; the connection on the appliance side is dealt with only once they have cleared the home. Could that be a leak? A brief whiff while the spark catches is common on gas ranges and should clear almost at once. If it lingers, gets stronger over time, or the burner lights with a pop, book a look at the ignition, and if the odor ever stays in the room, leave and call the utility from outside. ### Can I close the gas shutoff behind the range myself? Not while you smell gas. Reaching behind the range keeps you in the room and close to the source, and moving the range can strain the line further. Leave, and let the utility shut off and test the supply. ### Does propane smell different from natural gas? Both carry an added sulfur odorant, so both smell like rotten eggs. Propane is heavier than air and tends to settle low, around the floor and the drawer under the oven, so a smell down there counts too. ### My smoke alarm stayed quiet. Does that mean there is no leak? No. Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are not built to sense unburned gas.
