A range error code is the control telling you which test it could not pass. On a range those tests cover more ground than on an oven alone: the oven sensor and heating, the door lock, gas ignition in the oven, the touch keys, the link between boards, and on induction models the power board, the coils, pan sensing and the cooling fan. Some codes are not failures but settings, such as a control lock, a Sabbath setting or a showroom mode. The same code can mean different things on different brands, and on different models of one brand, so a code means something only alongside the model number. The 6 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 What exactly does the display show, including any letter that could be read as a number? 02 Does the code come back after the breaker has been off for a few minutes? 03 Does it concern the oven, the range top, or both? 04 When does it show: at start, in preheat, during self-clean, or with a zone on? 05 Can you find the model label? On many ranges it sits on the frame behind the drawer or just inside the oven door. ## Check these before you book. Range error code: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 Write the code down exactly as shown, or photograph the display. 02 If the code points to heat, or the range smells of burning or gas, stop using it; for gas, leave and call the gas utility from outside. 03 Find the model and serial label, often behind the drawer or on the frame inside the oven door. ### Also worth checking - Turn the range off at the breaker for a few minutes, restore power, and watch whether the code reappears. - Look the code up in the manual for your model, since some codes are settings rather than failures. ### How soon does it need a visit? Many range codes can wait for a visit. An overheat code, a code that comes with smoke or a burning smell, or a zone or oven that keeps heating is urgent: cut the breaker. Does it still need a technician? Maybe not. A reset clears codes left by a power blip. If the same code returns at the same point, the part it names is still failing and needs testing. ### Why do code lists online not match what my range is doing? Code lists are often for a different appliance or a different model family, even from the same brand. Match the code to the manual for your model number. ### Do induction ranges show more codes?
