Most ranges broil from the top of the oven: an electric element in the roof, or on many gas ranges a broil burner up there with its own igniter. Some older and simpler gas ranges broil in a drawer under the oven, using the same burner as bake. So the first question is where your broiler is. When broil fails while bake works, the broil element, the broil igniter or burner, or the relay or valve that feeds them is at the root of it; when both fail together, the supply, the sensor and the controls come first. The 5 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 Is your broiler at the top of the oven or in a drawer below it? 02 Does bake heat normally? 03 On an electric range, does the broil element glow along its whole length? 04 On a gas range, does the broil igniter glow, and does a flame appear? 05 Did you see a flash or hear a pop from the top of the oven? ## Check these before you book. Range broiler not working: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 Check in the manual where your broiler is and whether the door should be closed or open while it runs. 02 Turn broil on and watch through the window for an even glow or a steady flame across the top. 03 If you saw a flash or the element is split, switch the range off at the breaker and leave it off. ### Also worth checking - Keep the broiler pan and food well clear of the element or burner. - Tell us whether bake still works when you book. ### How soon does it need a visit? A broiler that does not work is not urgent. An element that sparked or split should stay off, so cut the breaker after a flash. The range cycles broil to keep from overheating, especially with the door closed. Frequent short cycles can also mean a door position the manual does not expect, or a sensor reading high. ### Is the drawer under my oven a broiler? On some gas ranges it is. On most others the drawer is for storage or for warming. The manual, or a burner visible in the drawer's ceiling, tells you which. ### Can the broil element be replaced without the bake element? Yes. They are separate parts, and only the one that failed is replaced. ### Why did the broil element spark and then go dark? That flash is the element breaking open where it had weakened.
