Do not switch on any zone, keep liquids off it, and cut the breaker if liquid got in or anything sparks. The glass is a replacement part ordered by model, so book once you have the model number. ## What it usually means. The glass on a smooth-top or induction range is a ceramic glass made to handle heat, but not a hard knock, a sharp point dropped on it or an empty pan left on high. Once it cracks, spills and cleaning water can run down through the crack onto live elements, wiring and induction coils, and the glass itself can break further as it heats and cools. A crack is not cosmetic: it means the top cannot be used until the glass is replaced, and on many ranges the glass comes as one part with its frame and trim. No. The glass is one piece, and heat anywhere on it can spread the crack. A spill anywhere on the top can also reach live parts through it. ### Is a small chip at the edge as serious as a crack? A chip at the edge can grow once the glass heats and cools a few times. Have it looked at before you rely on the top; sometimes it can stay in service, sometimes it cannot. ### Can the glass be fixed with a repair kit? Not safely. Resin kits fill the surface of a chip but do not restore the strength of the glass, and they are not made for the heat under a pan.
