Heat that does not stop can ignite a forgotten pan or anything left near the range. Cut the breaker on an electric or induction range, keep the area clear, and for a gas flame that will not go out call the gas utility or 911. Leave the range off until it has been repaired. ## What it usually means. On a gas range each flame depends on a valve behind its knob, so a flame that stays with the knob at off means the valve is not closing or the knob no longer turns the valve stem. On an electric coil or glass top, each element is switched either by an infinite switch behind the knob or by a relay on an electronic board, and a switch whose contacts have welded together keeps feeding full power. Induction zones are driven by a power board that can lock up the same way. Whatever the type, heat you cannot switch off is a fire risk, and the range has to be isolated rather than watched. No. A breaker is there to protect the circuit, not to run a range day to day, and a part that is already stuck can fail in a worse way next time. Leave it off. ### The glass top still feels hot long after I turned it off. Is it stuck on? Probably not. The glass holds heat, and the hot surface light stays lit until it cools. If the element under the glass still glows red or the pan keeps boiling, it is stuck. ### Why does my coil element only run on high? That is the classic sign of a failed infinite switch: it no longer cycles the power, so every setting behaves like high. It is more often a switch repair than an element one. ### What if a gas burner flame will not go out? Keep people and anything that can burn away from it and call the gas utility's emergency line or 911. They can shut the supply off safely.
