# Behind a Gas Range: What a Sound Connection Looks Like

A sound gas range connection runs from a manual shutoff valve you can reach, through a new, design-certified flexible connector of the right length, to the pressure regulator on the back of the range, with sealed threads, a leak test done with liquid detector and burners that light cleanly. Reused or uncoated brass connectors and untested joints are warning signs.

## At a glance.

Everything that feeds a gas range hides in the few inches between its back and the wall. You will rarely see it, but knowing what belongs there, and what never should, tells you whether the job was done properly the day the range arrived.

Read the whole guide

### Shutoff valve Manual, and easy to reach

GE wants it installed where it is easy to reach, outside the range itself.

### Connector New with every new range

GE: never use an old connector when installing a new range.

### Regulator The one shipped with the range

Both makers require it, and overtightening a fitting can crack it.

### Leak test Liquid detector, never a flame

Every joint is brushed and watched for bubbles before a burner is lit.

## The parts between the house pipe and the burners

A gas range connection starts where the house pipe comes out of the wall or floor. A rigid supply pipe, which Whirlpool asks to be 3/4 inch on natural gas so long runs do not starve the burners, ends at a manual shutoff valve. From the valve, a flexible metal appliance connector loops to an adapter threaded into the pressure regulator on the back of the range, and the regulator steadies the pressure before gas reaches the valves behind the knobs.

Each of those pieces comes with its own rule. The valve has to be a listed gas valve; the connector has to be new, of a certified design and sized for the range; the threads need a sealant rated for both natural gas and propane; and the regulator is the one shipped with the range, never removed or swapped. When the range is out from the wall for installation or service, this is what the installer or technician should find:

- A shutoff valve with a lever, open when the handle lies in line with the pipe.
- One stainless steel or coated flexible connector, free of kinks and sharp bends.
- Adapters at both ends of the connector, tightened with wrenches rather than by hand.
- The range's own regulator at the back, still in place.
- A grounded 120-volt receptacle in the marked area behind the range for the igniters and controls.

### Where the shutoff valve should be

GE's installation drawing places the pipe stub and shutoff valve coming through the wall or floor in a marked zone behind the range, outside the appliance itself, and tells the installer to show the household where it is. GE also asks for the valve to sit in an easily reached spot outside the range. If nobody ever showed you, ask the next technician who visits to point it out.

### Local rules that change the details

Codes differ by place, and the manuals print some of the differences. In Massachusetts, GE limits a flexible connector to 5 feet and Whirlpool to 3 feet, and both require any ball valve to be the T-handle type. Everywhere else both defer to local codes and, failing those, to ANSI Z223.1, the National Fuel Gas Code.

I.D.; no Teflon tape; wrench-tighten without turning the regulator, overtightening can crack it; disconnect above 1/2 psi; top burners light within 4 seconds, bake burner within 8 seconds or up to 50–60 seconds

## Why the connector is always new

The flexible connector takes the movement every time the range slides, and it wears where nobody looks. GE's instructions warn that old flexible connectors can cause gas leaks and say never to use an old one with a new range; Whirlpool's call for a new CSA design-certified connector 4 to 5 feet long, with a 1/2- or 3/4-inch inside diameter, where local codes allow one.

Nicor Gas, citing the Consumer Product Safety Commission, warns about one older type in particular: uncoated brass connectors, whose tubing can separate from the end pieces and cause a serious leak. Production of them stopped over two decades ago, yet plenty remain behind appliances today, and Nicor's advice is to have any uncoated brass connector replaced by a qualified professional with a coated brass or stainless steel one.

### Do not slide the range out to inspect it

The same Nicor page carries the warning that matters most to owners: moving an appliance even slightly, to clean behind it or to look at its connector, can make a weakened old connector fail. If you suspect an old brass connector, have it checked where it sits, and let the person who replaces it move the range.

## Sealing threads and tightening without cracking

Gas threads are sealed with a pipe-joint compound or thread tape made to resist both natural gas and propane, applied to the male threads. The two manuals disagree on tape: GE accepts a UL-approved thread tape with Teflon that resists both gases, while Whirlpool says not to use Teflon tape on its connection. That is one reason an installer works from the instructions for the range in front of them, not from habit.

Force matters as much as sealant. Whirlpool asks for every connection to be wrench-tightened while making sure the regulator itself is not moved or turned, and warns that connections to the regulator made too tight can crack it. GE puts a number on it, 25 foot-pounds at most, and asks for a backup wrench on the adapter.

I.D.; no Teflon tape; wrench-tighten without turning the regulator, overtightening can crack it; disconnect above 1/2 psi; top burners light within 4 seconds, bake burner within 8 seconds or up to 50–60 seconds

## How a leak test is done, and what it proves

Once everything is connected, the range controls are set to off and the supply valve is opened. Each joint from the valve to the regulator is then brushed with a liquid leak detector; bubbles mean gas is escaping, and that joint is corrected before any burner is lit. GE's gas supply section opens with the rule that no flame is ever used to look for a leak.

Testing the house piping is a separate job done at higher pressure. GE and Whirlpool both require the range and its own shutoff valve to be disconnected from the house pipe for any pressure test above 1/2 psig, and simply closed off from it for tests at or below that level.

### The light-up check that follows

After the leak test comes lighting every burner in turn. GE expects each top burner to catch within 4 seconds once air has been purged from the lines, and its bake burner within 30 to 90 seconds; Whirlpool expects its bake burner within 8 seconds, though it allows up to 50 to 60 seconds under some conditions. A clean result is a steady blue flame with a clear inner cone on every burner.

## What the owner can check, and what stays with the installer

The owner's part is small but useful: know where the shutoff valve is and which way its lever turns, keep the space in front of it clear, and notice changes such as a burner slow to light, yellow flames or a smell near the back of the range. Anything that puts a wrench on a gas fitting belongs to the installer, the gas utility or a qualified technician.

- On delivery day, ask the installer to show you the valve and to confirm the leak test was done.
- If the top burners work but the oven will not light after a delivery, the regulator's own oven shutoff lever may have been knocked to off in transit; Whirlpool describes it, and a technician can check it.
- Push the range back gently so the connector is not kinked or pinched against the wall.
- Any gas smell, at any time, means leaving the house and phoning the utility once outside.

## Where to stop

Leave every gas fitting to the installer, the gas utility or a qualified gas technician: fitting or replacing the connector, valve or regulator, leak testing, and pressure testing the house piping. A gas smell during or after any of this work means dropping everything, getting out of the house and phoning the utility from the street.

## Questions owners ask.

### Can a gas range be hard-piped instead of using a flexible connector?

Rigid pipe is allowed where local code calls for it, but Whirlpool notes that a hard-piped range cannot be slid out of its opening. A flexible connector lets the range come out for cleaning and repairs.

### How long may the flexible connector be?

Whirlpool calls for 4 to 5 feet, GE recommends 5 feet for ease of installation, and Massachusetts sets its own limits. Local code has the final say.

### Who should connect a new gas range?

In the manufacturers' own words, a qualified installer, a service agency or the gas supplier. Delivery crews differ in what they will connect, so ask before the range arrives.

### How can I tell if the shutoff valve is open?

On a lever-type valve, gas flows when the handle lies in line with the pipe and stops when it sits across it. Whirlpool's instructions show the open position that way.
