# Range guides, read first.

A range repair guide is only useful if it answers the question you actually have, so these are split by what you are trying to find out — is this worth paying for, what is that noise, what can I check myself — rather than by which part of the appliance it concerns.

## Work out what you are dealing with.

Split by what you are trying to find out rather than by what part of the appliance it concerns.

Reading did not fix it?

### The work itself

Every guide here ends in the same place: what a technician actually does about it, in the order it gets done.

10 kinds of work Cheapest cause first What a visit costs

See what we do

Curious what a range repair runs to? That has its own page rather than a line here, because no one can give a fair number before a technician has had the range out and opened it — [range repair cost](https://rangerepair.center/cost/).

## Not sure where to start?

Most range visits begin with one of a few questions. Each will get a guide that answers it before anything is booked, and some of them end in a fix that costs nothing at all.

[Or start from the symptom](https://rangerepair.center/problems/)

### The range is misbehaving and you are not sure why Five range checks to make before booking a visit

The breaker or the plug behind the drawer, the gas shutoff, locks and demo mode on the control, the caps and coils on top, and one timed test bake.

### Before the call or the form Where the model tag sits on a freestanding or slide-in range

The oven frame, the storage drawer, under a front control panel, behind the back panel or on the oven ceiling, and how to tell the model from a part number.

### There is a smell of gas near the range Smell Gas Near the Range? Leave First, Call From Outside

Why no knob, switch or phone gets touched, what to tell the gas utility, where gas can escape on a range, and why a detector backs up your nose.

### You are deciding between a repair and a new range Repair or replace a range: which half failed, and what a new one needs

Igniters, elements, sensors and hinges are worth fixing on nearly any range; a board nobody makes, rust through the oven body or a new circuit for a bigger model are where the sums change.

## When reading is not enough.

If the checks in a guide did not settle it, a technician picks up from there. The visit, stop by stop.

[What repairs cost](https://rangerepair.center/cost/)

1. 01 Every burner and the oven, tried
2. 02 A price before any part goes in
3. 03 Common parts on board
4. 04 Fixed, then run hot

## When there is no time to read.

These five can leak gas, start a fire or leave a burner or element running that nobody can shut off. Each page puts the causes in the order worth checking, and says when to stop and book.

## Questions about the guides.

### Can a guide take the place of a technician?

No. The guides explain how a range works and which checks an owner can safely make, so the simple causes are ruled out and the rest can be described clearly. Where a guide comes near a gas fitting, live wiring or the inside of the control panel, it tells you to stop.

### Are the guides written for my brand?

Most are written for a kind of range rather than one maker, because gas burners, radiant elements and induction zones behave much alike across brands. Where a make does something its own way the guide says so, and your owner's manual always comes first.

### Which range guide should I read first?

When the range is misbehaving today, the problem pages are the faster route, arranged by what you notice. The guides run longer and suit a question you have time for: why a flame burns yellow, what to check before a visit, or whether an older range is worth keeping.

### What are the range guides based on?

Each guide lists the sources behind its specific claims, such as manufacturer manuals and published gas and fire safety guidance. Where no source is given, the point is offered as what our technicians have seen on ranges, never as a rule.
